Why is a fraction used to prove the contradiction that √2 is irrational?

Even though the proof shows that the elements in both the numerator and denominator are even, wouldn't an odd/even also produce a rational number as well as an odd/odd. So, why exactly is this method used to prove that √2 is irrational?
